So…you decided to get a puppy! There are alot of factors that should influence your decision. Do you have the time to invest in a dogs’ training and exercise? Do you have the space for a dog? What breed is it and how big will it eventually get? And the list of questions goes on. Another one you should give consideration to….should I buy a puppy, or adopt one from a shelter?

The answer, of course, depends on your situation. For us, as parents of small children, the dogs’ disposition would be an important thing to consider. Getting a shelter dog who doesn’t have pit bull or an aggressive breed in its lineage is something we wouldn’t want to take a chance on. For someone who doesn’t have children around, this may not be an issue.

You may not qualify to adopt a dog. Did you know some agencies will not let you adopt unless the dog can be kept in the house?

Buying a puppy from a caring breeder can eliminate some of the guess work. Knowing what kind of dog you are getting is important. Ask how big will the puppy will get when it is fully grown. This helps you know how to provide for your dog. Housing, feed, and vet care all depend on the size and breed of your dog. Watch the parents of the puppy to get a good idea of what personality it will have. Getting your puppy from someone who raised and cared for them also gives you a resource of knowledge later, as you can reach out to them for advice or experience.
